Chess occupied a unique place in Soviet culture and was actively promoted in schools, youth clubs and workplaces. The pegged design kept the pieces securely in place even when travelling. The lid is embossed with the Russian word “Шахматы” (Shakhmaty – Chess), and the underside retains the original Soviet moulding and factory markings.
