This is a Civil War chess piece piece -- the knight. It's a Union soldier on horseback. I do not know the brand. My late husband bought me this set in 1997 and we learned the folly of putting out a chess set when you own a cat -- 3 headless pawns were the result. The base doesn't match photos I have seen of Franklin Mint so I just don't know the manufacturer. Beautiful workmanship on each piece.
